What does a medical-device KOL do?

A Key Opinion Leader (KOL) is a clinician who contributes specialist knowledge and experience from medical practice to discussions about a medical device and its clinical applications. This can include sharing observations on treatment responses, protocols, device usability and potential improvements.

KOLs can also help connect the technical perspectives of device engineers with the practical needs of clinicians. Following this appointment, Dr. Kim is expected to contribute experience in melasma, facial redness and pigmentation care to future advisory discussions about AdvaTx laser applications and technology development.

AdvaTx laser: 589 nm and 1319 nm wavelengths

AdvaTx, also referred to in Korea as the Adva laser or AdvaTX laser, is an AdvaLight dual-wavelength laser system using 589 nm and 1319 nm. The 589 nm wavelength targets hemoglobin for vascular applications, while the 1319 nm wavelength produces dermal thermal effects through water absorption.

Melasma is a complex pigmentation condition. In addition to increased melanin, vascular changes, dermal photoaging and changes to the basement membrane can be involved. When melasma and facial redness occur together, assessment should consider both pigment and vascular features, as well as the overall condition of the skin.

Treatment suitability must be assessed individually. The use of AdvaTx for melasma should be considered carefully in light of clinical evidence and each patient’s condition. This appointment and meeting are not a guarantee of treatment effectiveness or individual results.

Continuing clinical and technical exchange

At NEWVE Clinic, Dr. Kim provides laser care for concerns including solar lentigines, freckles, melasma and facial redness. Clinical experience with REEPOT, ruby, picosecond and vascular lasers informs an approach that considers the characteristics of each lesion and the patient’s skin condition.

The September 30 meeting connected device-development expertise with experience from clinical practice. Dr. Kim plans to continue academic and technical exchange with clinicians and medical-device specialists in Korea and internationally, drawing on experience in pigmentation, melasma and facial redness care.
